The Weepers

Aqeel Almusawi

Set in the Shiite community of Bahrain in the 1980s after the Iranian revolution, The Weepers follows three generations of a family who are different in almost every respect, though all of them are easily moved to tears. More broadly, the novel explores the relationship between the Shiites and followers of the Bahai religion, showing the similarities in their beliefs as well as the matters of irreconcilable difference that separate them; giving a nuanced portrayal of individuals who hold extremist views. The protagonist, Sadiq, possesses a unique ability to rise above the stubbornly held beliefs instilled by his family and the pain they cause him, continuing to love them and appreciate other sides to their personalities. Rich in details, The Weepers offers an in-depth portrayal of sociopolitical life and religious rituals in Bahrain and creates characters who are able to transcend the boundaries of their highly traditional society, which is reeling under the impact of the religious revolution nearby
